AeroGarden Seed Pods
Truth be told, I wasn’t into gardening years ago. The idea of planting seeds and investing so much time in taking care of them just didn’t appeal to me. But when I started working from home, I wanted to try my hand at it to keep myself grounded and also save some coin on produuce.
Gardening: Personal Mindset and Challenges
Sure, watching movies and working out at home is great, but it’s also important to change up my routine to avoid creative burnout. Those who work in the creative industry know that they need to de-stress (physically and mentally) to be able to churn out ideas.
Gardening and taking care of plants seemed to be the popular choice among friends and family. I honestly don’t blame them. Gardening can be therapeutic for those who take it seriously. Of course, it’s also not for everyone, especially those who get too busy and forget to water their plants.
The common gardening trends I’ve seen were either succulents or a full-blown vegetable garden. I was more interested in the latter because I wanted to grow my own food, which is both economical and would reduce the amount of times I needed to go out and buy salad greens. The only downside was that I didn’t have a spacious backyard since I live in a studio apartment in the middle of the city.
That said, the challenge was to find a gardening solution that was perfect for indoor use—something that could comfortably fit on my kitchen counter at best. That’s how I ended up finding AeroGarden’s beginner-friendly seed pod kits.
What are AeroGarden Seed Pods
AeroGarden is an indoor gardening device that makes it easier for people to grow vegetables and herbs in the comfort of their homes. It comes in different kits which include pre-planted seed pods that you simply place in the unit’s slots to fully grow.
Here are some of the pros of this product:
- The garden unit is soilless!
- It’s easy to use: After planting the seed pods, add water and Liquid Nutrients (a.k.a “plant food”) in the bowls and make sure the lights are giving the seeds enough “sun.”
- Crops can grow five times faster, so you can have ready-to-eat greens in just a few weeks (depending on the type of plant).
- No harmful chemicals like herbicides and pesticides were used.
The only con I can list is that an AeroGarden unit is quite pricey. But if you can afford it, it’s a great investment since you can simply buy more seed pods for as low as $12.95.
Features and Benefits
Now that you have an idea of what AeroGarden is, let’s get into some of the AeroGarden’s features that I’ve come to love.
No Soil? No Problem!
Since I live in an apartment and don’t have enough outdoor space to make a mess while planting, AeroGarden’s soilless device is a saving grace.
In addition, soilless gardening also has other perks. AeroGarden uses a hydroponic system, which uses less resources like water and fertilizer. This method typically uses 90 percent less water. The great thing is that the water, along with pre-mixed nutrients, goes straight to the plants’ roots. (Unlike in soil-based gardening where only a small amount of water actually reaches the roots.)
Nifty Seed Pods
These are essentially pre-planted seeds that need minimal effort in planting. You just pop them in the unit and add the resources it needs to grow.
What’s also amazing about them is the fact that you actually get organic produce once they’ve fully grown. There’s no GMO and you get all the vitamins and nutrients you need from your greens.
Also, once you’re done with one batch, you can get other seed pods (more on this later!) or a Grow Anything Kit so you can plant your own seeds in your AeroGarden. Again, the fact that it’s soilless means you don’t have to dig and till the land before you can cultivate new crops. Just harvest all the greens you need and start over whenever you want.
Plug and Leave
One of the concerns I had about gardening is how labor-intensive and time-consuming it can be. With my AeroGarden, all I need to do is to plug in my device, snap on the humidity dome, turn on the LED lights and leave it for the day.
The only thing I need to check from time to time are the water and plant food levels to ensure that my crops are in good shape. You can do this with just a few button clicks. More on this below.
The unit has three basic buttons: grow lights, water level, and plant food level.
The one for the lights is a basic on/off button. The heat coming from the bulbs are perfect for the seed pods’ growth, especially during the germination stage. The lights’ height is also adjustable, so you can lower or raise them depending on your crops’ growth stage.
However, I do have to remind you that these are super bright LED lights, which might bother some of you at night. Don’t worry, you can set an on/off timer on your unit before going to bed!
The water and plant food buttons mostly show indicators for both resources. When either of them get low, an alert on the unit or the AeroGarden Wi-Fi app will let you know if any of the reservoirs need a refill. Especially the water, which needs to remain at a certain level to achieve optimal growth.
There is also a control panel that lets you program your AeroGarden system. This usually depends on the seed pods you have at your disposal, so be sure to check the instructions for the ideal settings.
Yup, you can ask your Alexa to control the AeroGarden’s basic settings.
This is helpful for extra busy days where I need to focus and meet deadlines. All I need is to yell out “Alexa!” and ask her to, for example, switch the grow lights on or off. I can still take care of my plants without standing up from my work desk.
If you have an Alexa at home, here’s what you need to do:
- First, make sure that your unit is connected to your Wi-Fi and that you have the AeroGarden app.
- Next, pair the app to the Amazon Alexa App on your smart device.
- Complete the authorization and you’re done! Feel free to test it out for good measure.
As I’ve briefly mentioned earlier, the seed pods come in different herb and vegetable variants.
The standard Grow Anything 3-pod kit ($12.95), which lets you plant any seed in your collection, is already a good beginner investment. But if you’re looking for other seed pods for specific dishes, check these out:
AeroGarden Gourmet Herb Seed Pod Kits, 3-Pod
If you need a dash of herbs in your dish, this kit might be for you. This is your chance to have your own gourmet herb garden consisting of basil, dill, parsley, mint and thyme.
- You can harvest herbs anytime of the year. For example: Mint is in season during spring, but you can totally harvest some for your winter parties.
- You don’t have to deal with wilted store-bought herbs that might also be contaminated.
- You can store fresh herbs for long periods by keeping them in airtight containers or resealable bags.
AeroGarden Salad Greens Mix Seed Pod Kit
This kit comes with six seed pods for red/green leaf, romaine and butterhead lettuce. You’ll get salad greens within two weeks and you can continue harvesting them in the next six months or so.
- Lets you plant a specific set of veggies.
- It saves you money and time since you’ll have lettuce all year round.
AeroGarden Red Heirloom Cherry Tomato Seed Pod Kit
Pasta lovers might love these heirloom cherry tomato seed pods, which will bloom for months to a year. (Admit it: Natural-made tomato sauce does taste better than store-bought.)
- It usually takes 100 days before you can harvest heirloom tomatoes. But with this kit, it will only take a few weeks.
Since many people have chosen to work at home, having an alternate food source might help lessen your worries about scheduling your next grocery trip. No need for you to rush or adjust your deadlines for the day/week.
One can argue that planting seed pods in an AeroGarden isn’t the same type of gardening that many people at home. I beg to disagree because I still get the satisfaction of watching my plants mature.
Also, I get to harvest and eat my own vegetables later on. Plus, they're organic and healthier to eat. No complaints here.
