A grow tent is a sealed or semi-sealed room container used to grow different kinds of plants in controlled conditions. It is assembled with either strong metal frames or plastic, and a lightweight wall material (special layers of fabric and insulation material) with access for ducting and wiring.

It is often structured as rectangular prisms or cubes to easily fit to common home designs.

In this article, we’ll explore the best grow tents available on the market and decide which one is best suited to you.


An indoor garden is a huge responsibility contrary to what many people think. Sure, it’s not like a dog that would chew on your new sneaks, but it’s a handful in its own way.


Most plants are very particular to light. This is an issue mostly for tight apartments with small or blocked windows. You’d be gravely mistaken if you think normal ceiling lights would suffice. Installing grow light in a grow tent ensures light to reach multiple parts of the plant through the tent’s reflective surfaces. This is greatly beneficial for flower-bearing plants and fruit and vegetable crops.

Plants that don’t receive enough light show symptoms such as yellowing foliage or drying out. Eventually, the plant continues to decline until it dies due to its inability to undergo photosynthesis.


Balance between temperature and humidity plays a key role in accelerated growth of plants. Research shows that the ideal humidity range for vegetation is 50% to 70%, while flower-bearing plants thrive at a much narrow range of 50% to 60%.

When humidity is too low, plants transpire faster (this means water in plants evaporate more quickly) than the rate at how much nutrient they can absorb. The water where nutrients are dissolved dissipates to the low-humid environment, leaving a fatal concentration of nutrients on the plants. This is called nutrient burn that produces irreversible effects of browning or yellowing of leaves (See Figure 2). These dried out parts should be clipped to prevent the rot from spreading to different parts of the plant.

Conversely, when humidity gets too high, you’ll be having guests in your grow tent. Be prepared to make more room for mushrooms, fungi, and mildew.

Aside from the pointers mentioned above, a continuous supply of Carbon Dioxide through vents will ensure sustained plant activity.

A grow tent attached with the essential pieces of equipment can provide a stable and controlled environment conducive to optimal plant growth.


If you share your home with an OCD person, then they will surely appreciate you having this. A home grow set-up doesn’t always look like the ones on ads or on the internet. Especially when you’re just starting out, it may pass more of a forest than garden. Scattered leaves, dripping hoses, asymmetrical growth – how barbaric!

Grow tents help isolate your garden from the rest of the home. It fits your set-up to a wall or a corner and effectively contain the activity.

This item is also on the keeping-things-in list, not for the plants, but for your comfort’s sake. Plants produce different kinds of smell. Flower-bearing plants produce very strong odors during their flowering stages. Most people don’t appreciate the odor lingering throughout the room. Grow tents help contain this issue.



These are basically the pieces to assemble to make an actual grow tent. There are many videos online that show you easy techniques to get you building so you don’t waste the whole day figuring out what goes where. The structure includes the following items:

  • Corner joints – used to connect the end of the poles to form angles
  • Poles – main framework of the grow tent canvas; forms the edges to make a flat base and roofing and an upright structure.
  • Bars – used as frames for hanging and attaching important pieces such as grow lights
  • Grow Tent Canvas – the fabric material of the grow tent design with multiple layers. Inner layer is a reflective surface


Grow lights provide much needed light for plants to undergo photosynthesis. The reflective inner surface of the grow tent canvas helps facilitate light to reach most parts of the plants. It is important to technically assess the applicability of a grow light. Grow lights have a minimum distance to keep from plants. If it is too close, the plants could bleach and develop yellow spots.

  • Clamp Lamps – can be used with seedlings that don’t need much light
  • LED Grow lights – used for growing plants. It has design specifications to how much room it can efficiently accommodate. (i.e. you would need 2 pieces of 2x2 grow light for a 4x2 grow tent)


The ventilation system is responsible for the regulated flow of air in the grow tent. It facilitates the atmospheric parameters such as temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide supply.

  • Inline fan – capacity is measured in cubic feet per minute (cfm), this is how much air can move in at a time. It is usually found in the exterior of the grow tent along the exhaust ducting. Air that exits out of the tent is replenished with fresh air through intake vents.
  • Ducting – leads air out of the grow tent. It is important for these ducts to lead out of the room to avoid recycling of exit air to the intake vents leading to CO2 depletion, which is bad for the plants.
  • Carbon filters – usually connected to the exhaust to clean exiting air and remove odor. Most growers install this during the flowering stage when smell is strongest. This is an optional feature for general convenience.


These are parts for important fine-tuning and improvement:

  • Tape – ensures complete seal of structure and connections to prevent seepage of atmosphere. It is also important in dark stages of plant growth to patch pinholes.
  • Straps – to secure accessories such as carbon filters in place
  • Observation window – detachable layer where growers can observe the plants without fully opening a portion of the grow tent.



First things first, know where you’ll put the grow tent. If you plan to have it in your apartment, you might want to consider the compact sizes (See Figure 3). Make sure you have the perfect spot set in your home. This could be an old room or a corner of the house. Take the basic dimensions and bring this up with the manufacturer or supplier to help you figure out the final size.

If you have a wide-open lawn in your lot and plan, you may opt to go to larger options such as grow tunnels and grow domes to accommodate more plants, and give you room to walk around and enjoy the setting.


To reiterate, a grow tent is a special container designed to control and optimize living conditions. But that’s all there is to it. An example of a complete grow tent set-up would include accessories for ventilations (fans, exhaust, intakes, ducts), for lighting (grow lights, wiring, frames), hydroponics (tubes, hoses), plant structure (frames), and then some. Your choice of grow tent should have opening for all attachments you deem necessary. If not, well, be ready to improvise.


It is as much of a work preparing your home as it is preparing your grow tent. You’d want to set-up your home and the grow tent to accommodate all the important attachments. Example, there should be at least 2 feet of clearance from the ceiling to the grow tent roof to make space for fans and ducting. Another is setting distance between grow light and top of plants. The higher the intensity of the grow light, the larger the minimum distance between the light and the plant.


The cost will always be the most decisive factor in any purchase. How much cost you can tolerate is the amount of initial effort and capital you spend on the other areas. Personally, if I have already bought grow lights, fans, ducts, and other essentials, and eventually spent a ton of effort setting all of it up – I wouldn’t risk buying a cheap grow tent to jeopardize the project.


Quality-wise, there’s not much of a difference among the products. As we’ve discussed in the previous section, they all are made up of the same material, fabric, and metal – so they all seem to get the job done the same way. Sure, there may be small differences in features such as presence of observation windows, but nothing too crazy.

Considering the economic aspects of the products, we need to have a clear winner. And we’ve found that the iPower Grow Tent offers the most economical and practical option. It has all the necessities for a successful grow tent set-up at a very competitive price.

And as for the Gorilla Tent, personally, I wouldn’t consider this an option unless I develop a deeper love for home-growing, more than just the practicality and convenience aspect of the project. Among the four options, it’s got the most expensive price tag! However, this is indeed a popular brand for home-growing enthusiasts. It does utilize higher quality materials and thicker fabric for the best performance. If you have got loose purse strings, you can opt for the Gorilla for the better quality and popular branding.

Both LAGarden and Yield Lab may have a 2-way zipper access, but you’re rarely ever going to have to use it (harvesting, cleaning, mobilizing, installing). The additional features aren’t at all a pivotal aspect to justify the price increase.

Yield Lab offers flexibility with the duct and vent shapes, and also an observation window, both of which LAGarden doesn’t have. But again, economy-wise, LAGarden is still a better choice since these two perks of Yield Lab is just too small to consider for the huge price difference between these two.
