Garden Kneelers

Best Garden Kneelers

As someone too lazy to work out and sign up for a gym membership, gardening became my alternative exercise routine. Apart from the joy of watching your plant babies grow into beautiful sprouts, gardening provides fresh air, access to Vitamin D, moderate exercise, and tons of other benefits.

A few weeks down into my gardening hobby, I started to feel a sharp pain in my knees. This was when I started to search the internet to find the right pants, knee pads, or even supplements that could minimize my knee pains (or even prevent them from happening again in the future). Thankfully, I discovered garden kneelers.

Value Editorial

Garden Kneelers

Since it was my first time hearing about garden kneelers back then, I easily bought the first one that appeared in my search results. Had I known that I had lots of garden kneeler products to choose from, I should have looked more.

For those of you planning to purchase your very first garden kneeler, here’s a simple buying guide:

Garden Kneeler Pads vs. Garden Kneeler Benches: Which One Should You Choose?

For starters, the garden kneeler world is divided into 2 main parts – garden kneeler benches and garden kneeler pads.

Garden Kneeler Pads

To use a garden kneeler pad, all you need to do is to prop the thick mat in front of whatever you’re working on – and you’re good to go. What I like about garden kneeler pads is that since they’re just a small, thick mat, you can conveniently bring them whenever you want. They also come in a variety of sizes, colors, and styles, so you can easily incorporate your own style and favorite colors into your gardening tools.

The only downside, however, is that garden kneeler pads can be a bit too bulky sometimes. This could be a problem if your garden is located in a small space.

Garden Kneeler Benches

Our second candidate is a little more challenging to work with. Compared to a garden kneeler pad, a garden kneeler bench is more versatile and complex – mainly because of the frame that surrounds its flat bench. To use it as a kneeler on the ground level, you have to flip it where its padded base is closer to the ground, using its shorter legs as support. The catch is, you can use it as a bench too – hence the name. To use it as a bench, all you need to do is to flip it where its longer legs support the padded base, and you’re good to go.

What caught my attention (and soon, my wallet) is that garden kneeler benches can be used for both short and tall plants. I can use it while pruning, planting a seedling, or basically anything that needs eye-level care. At the same time, I can easily flip it for trimming taller plants, especially those at a height where both standing and kneeling won’t get me at a comfortable level.

Aside from working as structural supports, its frame also works as handles – which can be helpful for those having trouble getting up or getting down on a kneeling position. As someone who has a history of knee pains induced with excessive standing and kneeling, this small added feature is a game-changer.

Some garden kneeler benches even have storage pouches and wheels attached to their frames, where I can easily keep and access my gardening tools. A quick search on your trusted online marketplace may even give you fixed, portable, and foldable options. Given their multi-use nature, however, garden kneeler benches are more “utilitarian” compared to their smaller, more “aesthetic” counterparts. As someone who takes her gardening hobby a little bit too seriously, I ended up purchasing one for myself.

Health Benefits of Using Garden Kneelers

Did you know that garden kneelers – either garden kneeler pads or garden kneeler benches, are proven to have health benefits? No, the benefits I’m talking about are more than the knee pains I mentioned before. Garden kneelers prevent the wear-and-tear of your knees and legs from constant standing and kneeling. Hence, they can dodge you away from the following knee-related ailments:

  • Bursitis – this inflammatory ailment occurs when the small sacs filled with fluid that cushions your knees on the inside swell up. Bursitis can result in various conditions from mild stuff such as stiffness to more serious effects like disabling joint pain.
  • Tendonitis – similar to bursitis, tendonitis is also an inflammatory condition. However, the only difference is that this condition is relating to the tendons that bridge your knee muscles to your bones. While tendonitis-related pains may start mild, they could get bad fast if left untreated.
  • Plica Syndrome – this condition directly alters the size and shape of your knee ligaments. They can either become unnaturally folded or grow overly thick. Thankfully, Plica Syndrome doesn’t produce excruciating pain. Nonetheless, the effects of this condition can be a hassle.
  • Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome – also known as the "runner's knee," this condition refers to a concentrated pain right in front of your kneecaps. Although painful, the hurting caused by this syndrome can be easily alleviated through mild treatment.
  • Meniscus Tear – right on your knee joints lie small pieces of cartilage that stabilize and cushion the latter, which are called the meniscus. With regular exposure to unpadded, rough terrains, this can lead to a “meniscus tear,” a condition that can possibly end up in surgery.

Aside from preventing your knees from possible related ailments, have I also mentioned that investing in a well-made garden kneeler can keep your attire and posture maintained? After multiple purchases of garden kneelers in hopes of finding the one that I can settle for good.

Conclusion

Out of all five products I reviewed, I’d say that the Topmart Upgraded Garden KneelerSeat Portable Garden Stool would be my best choice. It has lots of pros (just like the rest of the products I reviewed), but the winning factor for me is the soft and comfortable cushion it has. Since it will be primarily used for kneeling (to prevent knee pains and injuries), cushioning should be one of the most important qualities you should look for in purchasing a garden kneeler bench.

I've mentioned that one of its downsides is that it scratches and slides on floors, right? I could have considered that, but since we're talking about a garden kneeler bench meant for outdoor gardening here, I kind of disregarded it. Besides, I can just buy cheap, little pads and simply tape them around the frames.

Did I also mention that the freebies are such a steal? It almost looks like an entire starting kit for gardening – which is perfect for those who are just starting in gardening. Although it was quite pricey, the materials and freebies that come with it make up for the price.
